Deby Coles Sew So Easy

Our Influencer of the Week manages to stay seriously connected to our network while residing in the Cayman Islands.  Nestled away in her own little slice of paradise, she lives a life full of scuba diving and beach BBQs…not to mention keeping up with two successful blogs.  We “warmly” welcome Deby Coles!

Tell us about your sites.  They’re distinctly different from each other!

I wrote my first blog post for Sew So Easy on Nov 27th, 2012.  I had started teaching myself to sew, and I saw so many fabulous sewing bloggers out there and found so many great tutorials.  I wanted to share what I was learning right from my very first time I sat at the machine as a way to mark my progress, and as a way to reference and thank all of those that were inspiring me and teaching me with their own posts. Now I hope that So Sew Easy has become a reference and inspiration to others learning to sew.  At the start it felt like it was just me, sewing in space, but then I started to get encouraging comments from readers and found a whole community enthusiastic about the subject and willing to share their expertise and feedback with me.  They help me laugh at my sewing failures and cheer me on when something fits just right.

Moms Make Money  just sort of came about by popular demand after I got so many inquiries about my success on the sewing site.  People started asking me to look at their sites and give them suggestions, or asked questions about advertising incomes, or newsletters and in the end it seemed a good idea to put all this information I was learning as a new blogger into a site which could become a reference for other new bloggers too.  I like to regularly include guest posts from other bloggers looking to share their ideas and experiences too.  Drop me a line if you would like to contribute!

Is there a post you’ve written that you’re particularly proud of or that has resonated especially well with your readers?

For So Sew Easy, all of the free sewing patterns have been popular and some of them now are in excess of 5,000 downloads!  I sometimes expect to turn a corner and see someone wearing the Summer Drape Top.

On Moms Make Money, every month I publish a full breakdown of my blogging income and how and where it was earned.  These are usually the posts that get the most views.  It’s a way of being accountable.  How could I set up a site offering blogging tips and advice if I wasn’t doing well myself and could prove it?

How do you get your Sverve on?

Sverve is a great way to share your own best content with other interested bloggers in your niche.  But I also like to use it as a source of inspiration and ideas for my own blog.  Often a post I see shared will lead me to a blogging question and if I have that question then I’m sure some of my readers will to – so that subject goes on my to-do list for research and a future post or project of my own.

Deby, aren’t you awesome! 5,000 downloads for some of the patterns? That’s amazing! I’m a happy contributor to a couple of your Pinterest sewing boards. I had no idea you had another blog, “Moms Make Money”. I love the way that sounds. I’m headed over there right now to soak up some mommy goodness.

    Congratulations!

Hi Shannon, yes there isn’t a lot of overlap in my subjects so I really don’t ever mention the other site when I’m sewing. They both have very distinct sets of readers, but any blogger reading about sewing may also be interested in the Moms Make Money site too. There are lots of good tips.
