Facebook has been around for awhile now, but it is still going strong! In fact, many people follow blogs exclusively through Facebook! If you don’t have one yet, you can go here to create a page specifically for your blog. It’s free to do so, and it’s a great tool for interacting with your followers in a more personal setting.
Already have a Facebook page for your blog? Perfect! Here are eight ways that you can improve your page!
1. Experiment - Every few months Facebook seems to be changing the way pages work, so keep experimenting to find out what
types of posts preform best. If you see other pages doing something successfully, don’t be afraid to emulate them, but with your own twist!
2. Thumbnails - When sharing a link to your blog, be sure that you hit the ‘remove thumbnail’ option before you post the status update. For some reason FB will promote links without thumbnails, far more than the statuses that include the small image. A lot of bloggers also get around this by stating in their status update *link in comments*, and then commenting on their status with the link, including a thumbnail. Either way that you choose to do it, you should see an increase of traffic from status updates and links formatted accordingly!
3. Be Relatable - One of the best things about social media is that you can create relationships with your fans through your status updates more than you could through a blog post. Post ‘real life’ photos from time to time or share what you are doing during the day, or anything else that your readers could relate to. This is their chance to get to know the real you, so let them in a bit! Sure, we all want to keep our privacy, but there are plenty of ways to share relatable, personal updates, without sacrificing privacy. Get creative and start building community among your fans!
4. Interaction - If you are going to be commenting on the updates from other facebook pages, consider logging in to your FB page account to do so. This will give you some extra exposure and the owners, or followers, of those pages might even end up joining your page if they like what you are contributing to the conversation.
5. Don’t Spam - Don’t be a facebook page spammer. Meaning, don’t visit other pages and say something like “hi, I just liked your page, please come like me back @MyAwesomePage!”. This is a major Facebook no-no! The only exception to this is when someone is asking you to share links on their page, or if you found the other person through a Facebook page hop. Even then, it’s nice to take a moment to explore their page and make comments that show you are there for the interaction, not just the “like.”
6. Host Follow-Alongs - This is a super fun way to get to know your followers, and give them a chance to share their pages. Just
post a status update asking for every one to share a link to their facebook page in the comments, and follow as many others as they want. It’s a really neat way to see your fans begin to interact with each other, and to start following your fans’ pages! I like to do this every week, and I often add my own twist! Instead of just asking fans to share their own page, I request that they share their page and one of their favorite pages to follow! This way I find out about lots of new pages, and I can visit the favorites to let them know that they cam highly recommended to me. People love receiving compliments, and oftentimes they will come by my page to say thanks to the person who shared their page. It’s great exposure for everyone and we always have a lot of fun with those!
7. Ask Questions - Asking your fans questions is a great way to get to know them and build interaction on your page. Every “like” and comment on an update boosts the visibility for that posting, so asking your fans to “like” if they agree or getting them to share their thoughts in a comment are two great ways to build the visibility of your posts while also learning more about your fans. You can ask questions that pertain to your latest post, or ask them about a topic that you are planning to post about in the future, or even just ask a fun question to get every one talking! Whatever way you choose, this is a great way to build your page!
8. Have fun! - It’s easy to stress over the numbers, but if you continue to enjoy the fans you have and focus on building relationships with them, more fans will come! Keep at it, and don’t let yourself get discouraged. Slow and steady growth is still growth!
